Building a Service Model

By Peter Wieland

Product managers focus on building new product features and functions, opening new markets or retaining existing clients, but they often fail to devote enough time, resources and strategic planning to service model development. A product service model is the design and documentation of a comprehensive set of business processes that collectively work together to deliver a product’s features, functions and services.

This paper presents a five-step methodology for building a product service model. Each step adds an increasing level of detail about the product’s service functions in a complete end-to-end process oriented view. The service functions include definition of each organizational support role and its service delivery execution process.
The methodology applies fundamental process design techniques. This paper demonstrates to product managers the tremendous value of applying this straightforward methodology, under the leadership of an experienced process designer or business architect.
